Facts about data centers

At the federal level, Politico reported on the growing support of a data center moratorium in Congress following Senator Bernie Sanders’ announcement that he will be introducing legislation to put a moratorium on data centers. While this legislation has not yet been filed, we are keeping an eye out for it. In addition, legislation was introduced by Representative Bonnie Wattson Coleman that would study the environmental, economic, and public health impacts of data centers.

At the state and local level, there have been a lot of great successes. South Carolina joined the growing list of states with moratoriums introduced in the state legislature, with a new bill being introduced that would halt the approval of new data centers until 2028. We’ve also seen several communities score wins in campaigns to stop data centers, including in Monroe Township, Ohio, Spring Hill, Kansas, and Oneota, NY. If you have had a win recently in your fights, please reach out to share, and we can include it in future email updates.
